Cat Drama!

Merlin, my writing cat, invented the art of sleeping under my halogen desk lamp. No, really, he'll tell you.

To the point where I had to make him his own special spot NEXT to my desk on a little four-drawer cabinet, because he had taken to such great sprawling I couldn't actually use my desk. He even has his own little gray faux-fur throw.

Today, his brother not only discovered the Spot of Great Warmth, but stole it. For like an hour.

And Merlin alternately paced over top of Arthur's head, stood watch, or tried to catch as much halogen heat as he could by huddling on the strip of desk next to Arthur's head. ANGST! CAT ANGST!

Merlin got down to disconsolately yowl a bit. Then Arthur moved, and Merlin was RIGHT THERE, OMG, are you out of my freaking spot yet? But Arthur was not out of the spot. Arthur was just preparing himself for a bath.

Merlin got back on the desk and tried to stare him down.

Arthur cleaned himself in his own good time, and finally left. Things to puke, places to pee.

Merlin flopped down immediately back in his spot, closed his eyes, and groaned contentedly. I'd take another picture, but it's nearly identical to pic 1 above.

...

Also, earlier today, I saw a squirrel acrobat:

Oh god. The look on Merlin's face in the second picture is PRICELESS.

To add insult to injury, Arthur didn't make nearly as good use of the Spot of Great Warmth as Merlin did (judging from the pictures).

That is *very* true. But I think his black fur gets heat from the light more efficiently, so he doesn't have to be as dramatic.

Merlin is so handsome. He clearly needs to be in the spotlight.

You are soooooo mean. It was your job to oust Arthur. Just look at that look on Merlin's face that you're Not Doing Anything About It. How dare you?

Poor Merlin.

I know it's fun to tease them and watch their tiny brains try to work these things out and yes, I laughed and enjoyed the story, but really.

Oust Arthur. Firmly but gently. Merlin can't do his job properly as your writing cat unless you do. He was clearly stressed by not being able to do his job.

Oz, surrounded by nine, count 'em, nine cats, and all their assorted layers of interaction and who's in charge here?

*laugh* But I wasn't writing! ;)

And yes, it was clearly my job to oust Arthur, but the poor guy is on the bottom of every pecking order in the house, and I wanted to give him his day in the sun. Whereby sun=halogen lamp.

Well if he would stop puking and peeing indiscriminately, he might rise up a bit in the pecking order. And I presume you know it's Arthur doing this? In this house, they try to point paws at each other and deny any connection with the mess.

He's really more of a puker than a peer. Pee-er? He pukes indiscriminately, but to my knowledge, his only out of the box pees have been the two times access to the litter boxes got cut off, at which point he displayed his frustration by peeing ON US ON OUR BED WHILE WE SLEPT. Can't blame him, but boy, maybe a little more passive in his aggressive would be okay.

(Pee on us once, shame on the guest who closed the door to the basement; pee on us twice, shame on us (and the same guest who a year later closed the door to the basement again)--we cut a hole in the door after that.)

I know the feeling of being peed on in my bed. Or getting into a bed and finding the wet spot. That cat has long gone to her rest and the new ones haven't thought of this P/A behavior yet. She used to pee on the electric stove, too. And I had never heard of burner covers. It's an amazing smell when heated.

And she didn't have his excuse about his litter box. It was all part of her neurotic charm.

Our kitty Morgan does the exact same thing with my desk lamp. New kitty Caroline has found the Spot of Ultimate Warmth and takes it for her own. Former Alpha Kitty Morgan gets upset by this but ultimately does nothing. That I know of.
